It is with immeasurable sadness that we have to announce that after a battle with cancer and COPD our founder Dot passed away at home last night.
Dorothy Beeson was born July 6th 1947 and founded The Swan Sanctuary in her back garden in the early 1980’s.
She also dedicated herself to helping vulnerable children for many years through the youth justice system.
Over the years she with the help from family and volunteers built The Swan Sanctuary in to a haven for sick and injured Swans and Waterfowl.
In 1991 she was awarded the BEM and went on to be awarded the MBE by Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor castle in 2015. She was also awarded the Pride of Britain Award in 2001 and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) award in 2015.
Her hard work and dedication allowed The Swan Sanctuary to flourish going on to receive the Lord Erskine Award in 2000 and the Queens Award for Voluntary Service (2018), presented by HRH Princess Alexandra to Dot at the Sanctuary in 2019.
She passed away peacefully at home with her family on May 1st 2020.
