Family Troubles

27th August 2019 – Petersfield

Over the course of a few days we were called out to a swan family at a pond in Petersfield. The local residents had tried to catch the dad when they saw line coming from its mouth but had been unsuccessful. They also noticed that one of the cygnets was not thriving as well as the others and so Sally and Ian went down to see if they could help. The cob had swallowed a hook and so he was caught and brought back to the Sanctuary for an operation to remove it. The cygnet was also small, lethargic and off his food, probably the runt of the brood so it was scooped up at the same time and brought back to see if we could feed him up.

The operation to remove the hook was a success and we hope the cob will soon be returned to his family. Unfortunately the cygnet still continues to struggle so it will be staying with us in the crèche where we can look after it.
