Oil Spill Brentford Lock

Steve and Sally were called out late on Saturday the 9th of October by the out of hours service of the Canal and Rivers Trust with reports of an oil spill at Brentford Lock in Middlesex.

On arrival they found the two adult swans covered in what appeared to be heavy diesel and set about trying to catch them. Initially the rescue seemed to go smoothly and the swans were encouraged into the lock so they could be caught. One was caught quickly but the other managed to fly out of the lock and off up the canal. Our intrepid rescuers were out until 11 o’clock when the finally caught the escapee and both were returned to the Sanctuary.

It was then time to get out the Fairy Liquid and give the pair a good clean to get off the majority of the diesel before they ingested any more by trying to clear it themselves. Once this was done they had a rinse off in the indoor hydrotherapy pool.

Finally they went under the heat lamp to dry off and have a well deserved feed. Hopefully they pair can be returned to their home once the oil spill has been dealt with.
